How It Works

This table shows characters commonly used for transliterating foreign names. Mandarin has multiple character options for most sounds, but standard choices exist for names and place names. Most of the standard choices come from reference works that the Xinhua News Agency compiles. Wikipedia has an overview of transcription into Chinese characters.

Characters are chosen for positive meanings or simple strokes. Frequency shows real usage.

The characters are simplified, because the transliteration data uses simplified characters. The tone table shows traditional characters for the same reason.
